The axiomatic unity of the economic and immanent trinity: The study of Karl Rahner’s trinitarian ‘Grundaxiom’

The Trinity is an Absolute Mystery of God's essence that not even after its revelation in the economy of salvation can be fully grasped by human reason (RAHNER, 1972, p. 312). In so doing, the aim of this essay is to present the Trinitarian 'Grundaxiom' (the fundamental axiom) developed by Karl Rahner, as a contribution to the reflections and updating of the dogma of the Trinity in twentieth-century theology. The fundamental thesis of the 'Grundaxion' states that the Immanent Trinity is the Economic Trinity and vice versa. Since the vice-versa has constituted a theological problem for several thinkers regarding the nature of God, based exclusively on Rahner's writings, this essay will present the theology of the 'Grundaxiom', detaining itself specifically in the study of Rahner's treatises on the Trinity, in order to enquire whether this axiom still constitutes a problem for twenty-first-century theology
